What Is EVO ICL?

Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) are ideal for patients seeking an alternative to laser vision correction procedures like LASIK. A removable solution for people with moderate to severe nearsightedness, ICLs can also address astigmatism, and even offer additional benefits like UV protection.

ICLs may be particularly beneficial for individuals with higher nearsighted prescriptions or thinner corneas—issues that can affect LASIK candidacy. However, they are also a suitable option for people interested in clearer vision without altering corneal structure. The best way to learn if they are a good fit for you is through a consultation with one of the experienced eye doctors at 20/20 Institute.

The EVO ICL

The EVO ICL represents a series of advancements over the original Visian ICL which had been available in the United States for many years. EVO ICL is the newest implantable lens for vision correction—approved in March 2022—designed to correct myopia with or without astigmatism. Able to treat a broader range of nearsighted prescriptions than other vision correction options, EVO ICLs may be able to provide clarity and focus for patients whose vision issues cannot be treated through methods like LASIK.

Representing a significant advancement in surgical vision correction, EVO ICLs are manufactured with varying optical zones, allowing some to correct for both myopia and astigmatism and others to address a single issue alone. This range of options allows for optimal personalization, allowing an even larger number of patients to benefit from ICL surgery.

Both the EVO ICL and EVO+ ICL are placed just behind the iris, in front of the eye’s natural lens, adding to instead of removing a portion of the eye. Because ICL surgery is completed without thinning the structure of the cornea,   modifications or updates, should they be needed in the future, may be available with laser-based corneal refinement procedures like LASIK.

Benefits of EVO ICL Surgery in Denver

EVO ICL surgery offers several advantages for patients seeking effective and reliable vision correction. These include:

  • High-Definition Vision: One of the most immediate benefits noticed by patients after EVO ICL surgery is the dramatic improvement in visual clarity and sharpness. This high-definition vision enhances depth and contrast perception, making it easier to engage in activities that require precise visual acuity, such as driving at night or participating in sports.
  • Built-In UV Protection: EVO ICLs have built-in UV protection, allowing them to help safeguard your eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. Unique to ICLs, this feature is particularly beneficial as it helps to protect the eyes from potential long-term sun damage, which is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other serious conditions.
  • Preservation of Corneal Thickness: EVO ICL does not require the removal of corneal tissue, allowing it to maintain the integrity and natural thickness of the cornea. The preservation of corneal tissue may also help make the procedure better suited to people who are not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas.
  • Quick Recovery: The recovery process for EVO ICL surgery is quick and painless. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours. However, visual results may not be fully noticeable for three to four weeks.
  • Reversible: Laser vision correction cannot be reversed. EVO ICLs, on the other hand, can be removed or replaced if needed. The reversibility of EVO ICL can provide peace of mind to patients who may wish to seek additional procedures in the future.

The benefits offered by EVO ICL make them a compelling choice for people looking for a dependable and advanced vision correction solution. During your FREE evaluation at one of our four Colorado locations, we can help you determine if they are the right solution for your specific needs.

EVO ICL vs. LASIK: Is One Better Than the Other?

Choosing the best vision correction surgery depends on a multitude of individual factors, including eye structure, vision needs, prescription, and personal lifestyle. While both EVO ICL and LASIK are incredibly effective procedures, they address different patient needs and preferences. The best way to learn if ICL or LASIK is better for you is through an evaluation with one of our dedicated vision correction specialists.

EVO ICL can treat a higher degree of myopia than LASIK. However, at this point, unlike LASIK, ICLs are not FDA-approved in the United States for the correction of hyperopia (farsightedness), making them more limited in the range of refractive errors they can treat. In addition, EVO ICL may be a better option for people with thinner corneas, but vision correction can take slightly longer to achieve. With LASIK, results are typically noticeable within 24-48 hours.

Another consideration in the EVO ICL vs. LASIK debate is your age. While LASIK is approved for anyone over 18, ICLs are only approved for those aged 21 to 45. Of course, this is far from an exhaustive comparison between ICLs and LASIK, but it highlights some of the differences that can play a role in which option is best for you.

Neither EVO ICL nor LASIK is categorically better than the other. One may, however, be better for you. The eye doctors at 20/20 Institute take the time needed to carefully assess your candidacy for both options, allowing us to guide you toward the one that will offer you the results you deserve.
